As the sun spends more time in the sky and the weather begins to warm, fresh green shoots emerge from the earth, buds form on tree branches, and blossoms burst forth in an array of vivid color. Spring has arrived, and with it, an abundance of nourishing plants that are useful to the earth as well as our bodies.

How amazing is it to have a wide variety of plants right outside your door to help you start your year off on a healthy note.

Many people walk right past these plants, oblivious to the help they have to offer. Others are aware of the benefits these plants offer but feel inadequate to utilize these plant allies on their own. So What Do You Say?

The green world awaits!

“Chances are, you have some pretty tasty and useful plants growing within walking distance of your home, even if you live in a city or desert. If you’re not yet familiar with your green neighbors, start by walking on the same street, path, or trail every day, learning the plants that grow there. As you become familiar with the green places and plants in the area that you live, a whole world will open up to you. Feeling the earth under your feet and knowing which plants will nourish and feed you is empowering and liberating—you become aware of your place in the ecosystem and on the land.” – Unit 3, Lesson 3: Common Wild Herbs and Edibles, of the Botany & Wildcrafting Short Course

5 Herb Gardening Books To Inspire Your Next Botanical Garden

5 Herb Gardening Books To Inspire Your Next Botanical Garden | Herbal Academy | Whether you are a seasoned herb grower or a newbie, we've compiled five herb gardening books that are sure to help inspire your next botanical garden.

This is the time of year when a day with slightly above average temperatures and sunshine leads to a longing for spring. Seasonal changes, such as the snow beginning to melt or the days growing longer, tempt us outside for just a bit longer each time. Once quick, dreaded trips to the mailbox evolve into enjoyable walks, and we find ourselves making excuses to not be indoors!

These days in between the chill of winter and the reliable warmth of summer allow us time to begin dreaming up plans for the season’s upcoming garden. Whether you live in an area where snow still threatens to dash your spring dreams or are already able to walk barefoot on the earth, now is an opportune time to plan your herb garden.

It can feel intimidating to take this step into being responsible for a community of green neighbors in the garden. Sometimes this fear keeps potential herb growers from planting that first seed. However, growing herbs firsthand offers an invaluable opportunity to connect with your green allies and build your green thumb experience.

5 Herb Gardening Books To Inspire Your Next Botanical Garden | Herbal Academy | Whether you are a seasoned herb grower or a newbie, we've compiled five herb gardening books that are sure to help inspire your next botanical garden.

Fortunately, there are many quality resources available to both the seasoned herb grower and the newbie. Below I’ve compiled my five favorite herb gardening books that are sure to help inspire your next botanical garden.

5 Inspirational Herb Gardening Books

5 Herb Gardening Books To Inspire Your Next Botanical Garden | Herbal Academy | Whether you are a seasoned herb grower or a newbie, we've compiled five herb gardening books that are sure to help inspire your next botanical garden.

1. Medicinal Herbs: A Beginner’s Guide by Rosemary Gladstar

Known as the godmother of modern American herbalism, Rosemary Gladstar is an experienced herbalist and teacher whose wisdom is made accessible to the beginning grower and budding herbalist through this book. In it, Gladstar eloquently walks the reader through the world of herbs, from understanding the terminology, to growing your own herbs, even including how to make your own herbal preparations.

Gladstar covers common culinary herbs like basil (Ocimum basilicum), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), sage (Salvia officinalis), and thyme (Thymus vulgaris), teaching the reader how to grow these herbs successfully in the home garden. She also shares advice on growing and using herbs known for their wellness properties, such as burdock (Arctium lappa), dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), nettle (Urtica dioica), and yarrow (Achillea millefolium).

This is an excellent first-read for any beginner who is feeling uncertain about starting a garden. Gladstar’s vast knowledge and experience allows readers to put her tried-and-true herbal advice to the test with the security of knowing they are learning from the best!

2. Growing and Using the Healing Herbs by Gaea and Shandor Weiss

This is one of my favorite herb gardening books to refer to when planning my garden. The wisdom of the Weisses found me one day when I was selling herbal products at a farmers market and a customer kindly gifted me with this book.

This classic resource can be found on the bookshelves of many herbalists, seasoned and beginning, and gardeners, large and small scale. The book begins by grounding the reader in the history and traditions of herbal use through the ages and across the globe, sharing the origins of herb gardens and herbal traditions in various cultures.

One of the most useful components of this book is the inclusion of an illustrated guide of herbs and other plants with beneficial properties. This is helpful in a number of ways: identifying what is already on your land that you could potentially further cultivate (or perhaps see as a gift from nature rather than as a pesky weed); determining what kinds of plants would grow well in your garden; and learning about new plants that you may have never considered.

Lastly, the final chapters, “Creating a Garden of Healing Herbs” and “Good Things from the Garden: Gathering and Using the Herbal Harvest,” are excellent guides for the new and seasoned herb gardener to refer to.

This informative and enjoyable book is a wonderful companion to assist and inspire your herb gardening journey.

3. Herb Gardening from the Ground Up by Sal Gilbertie and Larry Sheehan

The subtitle of this book says it all: “Everything you need to know about growing your favorite herbs.” Gilbertie and Sheehan provide this excellent gardening companion with information accessible to anyone on an herb gardening journey. Their emboldening approach to herb gardening is established by an introductory chapter entitled, “Herbs are for Everyone.” This welcome into the sometimes intimidating world of herbs and gardening is reassuring and inviting to the hesitant grower.

The following chapters provide detailed and clear advice and instructions on how to start seeds indoors, divide perennials, maintain the garden, harvest and store herbs, and plan for your second season. There are even step-by-step plans for a variety of garden types, from a more traditional culinary garden to a salad garden, and even a Christmas wreath garden.

Experienced herb growers and authors Sal Gilbertie and Larry Sheehan simplify herb gardening so anyone with a little soil can get started. If you enjoy this book, you can find several other herb gardening books by these same authors to support you as you endeavor to grow your own herbs.

4. Growing 101 Herbs That Heal by Tammi Hartung

In Growing 101 Herbs That Heal, author Tammi Hartung offers her seasoned expertise as both an herb grower and a board member of United Plant Savers. Hartung and her husband Chris have run Desert Canyon Farm, their certified organic herb farm, for more than 20 years.

Hartung shares her wisdom and time-tested experience over the many seasons on her farm, starting with how to select plants and how to design your garden. As indicated in the title, she focuses on 101 herbs, helping the reader hone in on some of the most used herbs. She delves for a time into the heart of every garden: the soil—sharing how to develop this critical component. Then she moves to the necessary tasks of maintaining the garden, which Hartung guides the reader through expertly in her chapters on growing methods, maintenance, and pest and disease control.

Hartung finishes the book by teaching the reader how to harvest herbs and the really fun part: how to enjoy the harvest through herbal preparations and healing foods. Perhaps the most helpful and unique aspect of Hartung’s work is her inclusion of “A Gardener’s Materia Medica,” in which she provides her own trusted resources and recommended reading.

This book feels one part herb gardening encyclopedia and one part beautiful coffee table text. Its 600 content-rich pages offer more than 750 photographs, 270 pages of detailed information on how to grow nearly 500 plants, and 100 pages of design advice to assist gardeners in turning information into targeted solutions for their common problems.

14 Must-Have Supplies For Herbalists (Plus A Free Printable Herbal Toolkit Supply List)

14 Must-Have Supplies For Herbalists (Plus A Free Printable Supply List) | Herbal Academy | Are you setting up your home apothecary but wonder which supplies are necessary? Here's a printable list of 14 supplies that are most helpful to herbalists.

Whether you’re brand new to herbalism or you’re trying to set up your home apothecary, you’ll want to stock up on some particular supplies to support your work with herbs. But which ones are necessary? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a checklist of herbal supplies needed to set up your herbal workstation?

We think so, which is why we’ve pulled together a list of 14 supplies that are most helpful to herbalists. We’ve even included a free Herbal Toolkit Supply List printable for you at the end of the post so you can better keep track of your supplies (the ones you have on hand or those you need to stock up on).

14 Supplies For Herbalists

Herbs

We’re pretty sure this one is obvious. Every herbalist needs herbs to work with! Herbs can be found growing right out in your backyard or you may prefer to purchase them from local herb shops or reputable businesses online. Either way, you will need a variety of herbs—which ones will depend on your interests and your wellness needs.

If you’re looking for a good place to start your herb collection, the Herbal Starter Kit can help! It comes with up to 18 sustainably-sourced herbs that can be used in a many different recipes. The Herbal Academy developed this stand-alone kit based on the herbs that are talked about most throughout the Introductory and Intermediate Herbal courses—so it’s perfect for getting started!

Solvents

A wide array of solvents will be useful in making a variety of common herbal preparations such as syrups, tinctures, and infused oils. Carrier oils like olive oil, sweet almond, and coconut oils are great for making infused oils and salves. Various alcohols with varying alcohol percentages such as vodka, gin, and high-proof alcohol are the basis for making herbal tinctures. Vinegar (e.g., apple cider or white wine vinegar), glycerin, and honey (raw and local, when possible!) are often used in herbal recipes as well.

Wax and Butter

If you’re planning on making salves, creams, or body butters, having a variety of waxes and different kinds of butters on hand will be helpful. Beeswax is the most commonly used wax, but there are other vegan varieties like candelilla, carnauba, and soy. Butters may include cocoa, shea, avocado, kokum, etc.

Note that the butters and oils discussed above have shelf lives in the several months to 1-2 years range, so they won’t keep indefinitely; therefore, it may be most cost effective and conscientious to purchase smaller quantities with particular recipes in mind.

14 Must-Have Supplies For Herbalists (Plus A Free Printable Supply List) | Herbal Academy | Are you setting up your home apothecary but wonder which supplies are necessary? Here's a printable list of 14 supplies that are most helpful to herbalists.

Storage Containers

Storage containers are a necessity when it comes to storing herbs and any herbal products you create. Dried herbs can be stored in glass jars such as Mason jars while finished herbal products can be stored in various sized glass bottles, jars, and tins. These containers can be used in many different ways. They’re not only great for storing your supplies and preparations in but for gift-giving as well. (Note that reusing jars from the grocery store that formerly housed spaghetti sauce, jam, olives, or herbs is a great money-saving tip— as long as they are thoroughly cleaned and sterilized!)

You can find tincture bottles, spray bottles, and tins in the Goods Shop. And don’t forget the labels!

14 Must-Have Supplies For Herbalists (Plus A Free Printable Supply List) | Herbal Academy | Are you setting up your home apothecary but wonder which supplies are necessary? Here's a printable list of 14 supplies that are most helpful to herbalists.

Kitchen Scale

A kitchen scale will come in handy any time you go to weigh herbs for herbal preparations that require precise measurements such as weight-to-volume tinctures. Be sure to look for a scale that weighs in grams and ounces.

Mixing Bowls and Saucepans

Whether you’re measuring and weighing herbs, storing things, or mixing ingredients together, an assortment of different sized bowls from small to large will be a necessity. You’ll also want to have various sizes of saucepans available for infusing and melting things. We recommend glass, stone, enamel-coated, or stainless steel bowls and pans.

Measuring Utensils

Glass measuring cups, dry measuring cups, measuring spoons, and graduated cylinders will all be necessary when you need to measure out various amounts of herbs, solvents, waxes, and more for any recipes you want to make. You probably already have these in your kitchen, minus perhaps the graduated cylinder, which you will need only if measuring very accurate amounts of solvents for tinctures.

Kitchen Utensils

Speaking of making recipes, having a supply of spoons, spatulas, knives, kitchen scissors, and cutting boards on hand will make snipping, chopping, whipping, and scraping ingredients into the necessary sizes and textures all the easier. A mortar and pestle is a lovely and effective tool for grinding and powdering fresh and dried herbs. A spice grinder is a great option as well. Don’t forget funnels, strainers, and cheesecloth for straining and bottling finished products.

14 Must-Have Supplies For Herbalists (Plus A Free Printable Supply List) | Herbal Academy | Are you setting up your home apothecary but wonder which supplies are necessary? Here's a printable list of 14 supplies that are most helpful to herbalists.

Foraging Bag

If you plan on doing any herbal wildcrafting, you’re going to need something to put your harvested plants and mushrooms in. A canvas or cotton bag that’s lightweight and has pockets for carrying things is a great tool to have at your fingertips.

Check out the Plant Identification Tote Bag in the Goods Shop. It makes a perfect foraging bag!

Scissors, Shears, Knives, and A Hand Lens

Speaking of foraging, having a good pair of foraging scissors tucked into your bag is a must for clipping flowers, stems, and small branches. For larger things like roots and thicker branches, a pair of pruning shears will be needed, and a good sharp pocket knife will be necessary for harvesting bark. Don’t forget a hand lens for getting a close-up look at the plant you’re harvesting.

14 Must-Have Supplies For Herbalists (Plus A Free Printable Supply List) | Herbal Academy | Are you setting up your home apothecary but wonder which supplies are necessary? Here's a printable list of 14 supplies that are most helpful to herbalists.

Foraging scissors can be found in the Academy’s Goods Shop.

Notebook

As any herbalist knows, having a variety of notebooks on hand is a must for writing down thoughts, ideas, lessons learned, recipes, and anything else you want to remember. No matter how many times we tell ourselves we’ll remember our latest recipe success (or failure), the truth is that unless we write it down, it may be lost forever!

We love moleskine notebooks, but we also like to keep a 3-ring binder with page dividers and blank paper on hand as well for collecting various notes, handouts, or recipes all in one place.

Writing Utensils

Pens, paper, colored pencils—even watercolors are great supplies to have on hand for jotting down information or to use when creating your herbal materia medica. You can use many of these supplies to sketch, draw, and paint parts of a plant you’re studying as a way to enhance your herbal studies.

14 Must-Have Supplies For Herbalists (Plus A Free Printable Supply List) | Herbal Academy | Are you setting up your home apothecary but wonder which supplies are necessary? Here's a printable list of 14 supplies that are most helpful to herbalists.

Books

Books are most certainly a must-have supply, and as many herbalists would agree, you can never have too many! There are herbal books galore for so many different aspects of herbalism—foraging books, books for beginners, books for children’s health, advanced study books, old-time herbals, and more.

Check out the Herbal Bookshelf to find the next herbal book that will make its way into your herbal library!

Computer

In the modern world we live in, having a computer (or access to one) often feels like a necessity. Computers help quicken research and communication with others, and they can even help one to pursue an education—herbalism included.

If you’re interested in pursuing an online herbal education, be sure to check out the many herbal course, short courses, and paths the Herbal Academy offers. And don’t forget—all herbal courses and paths are on sale until December 31st!

A Quick Word On Sourcing Sustainable Products

Sustainability is an important issue, but it’s not so easy to pinpoint. Sustainability really comes down to using resources wisely, in a way that ensures they’re around for years to come, and ensuring that production practices are protective of the health of plants, their ecosystem, the land, and people.

Here’s the thing, though. Sustainability of a particular resource isn’t something that’s set in stone. It often changes depending on a variety of factors such as location, weather, farming, and harvesting practices, etc.

Take frankincense essential oil (Boswellia carterii) for example. This essential oil is an at-risk essential oil, but as far as we know, this is only true for Boswellia carterii sourced from Somalia due to reports of over-harvesting. Boswellia carterii from other locations are not known to be at risk at this time (Tisserand, 2017).

As you can see, sustainability of a plant or product ebbs and flows based on a variety of factors. The point is to do your research and only purchase supplies from companies who are committed to sustainable sourcing.

Coloring to Learn: An Herbal Coloring Book Review

Coloring to Learn: An Herbal Coloring Book Review | Herbal Academy | Have you considered learning herbalism through coloring? Here's a collection of coloring books to help any herbalist get to know herbs on a new level!

Herbalism is a truly beautiful endeavor. The plants speak to us through our senses with a combination of aroma, taste, color, and form—coming together to create a picture of each plant as a whole. When really learning about a plant, we as herbalists benefit from understanding form of the plant at a deep level. It is part of our study.

Herbal coloring books offer us an opportunity to delve into the physicality of herbs. They offer us an opportunity to discover what an herb looks like and perhaps how to identify it in the wild, all with a bit of fun along the way! Coloring for adults has become increasingly popular as a way to ease stress while increasing mindfulness and providing a rest from worldly concerns—an added benefit!

Spending time coloring plant sketches can offer:

  • Learning plant morphology and physical patterns of plants to help with identification, either in addition to a close study of live plants or when we don’t have access to live plants.
  • Engagement with learning about herbs and especially delving into studying one herb at a time.
  • Herbal resources and fodder for building a materia medica!
  • Another method for ruminating on and engaging with plants.

Fortunately, there are some wonderful botanical coloring books available to support this approach to herbal learning. Below is a collection of coloring books to help any herbalist get to know herbs on a new level!

5. The Herbaceous Human by Philippe Grenade XIV & Anne Grenade

This truly unique publication is perhaps my favorite herbal coloring book. The gorgeous illustrations marry the beauty of systems found within the human body with the herbs that are employed to support and nourish those systems. Twelve systems are covered, including the cardiovascular, nervous, digestive, and reproductive systems. Each drawing features herbs artfully intertwined and represented within the organs for which the plants are used. Also included with the pictures is information on the properties and benefits each herb offers. The pages are a heavy stock and so even watercolors can be used for lovely blending of colors.
